Abstract
This study explores Mohammad Hatta’s concept of ethical independence and its relevance to the development of character education from the perspective of Islamic Religious Education. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach by combining a study of Hatta’s intellectual thought with an institutional case study. Data were collected from Hatta’s written works, an in-depth interview with Meutia Farida Hatta, and academic documents and publications from Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), an institution historically connected to Hatta’s educational ideas. The data were analyzed thematically to identify the moral and spiritual values embedded in Hatta’s notion of independence. The findings indicate that honesty, responsibility, simplicity, and faith constitute the core elements of Mohammad Hatta’s ethical independence. These values are closely aligned with the principles of Islamic education, which emphasize the integration of faith, knowledge, and practice. Within the context of Islamic higher education, Hatta’s ethical values are reflected in character education practices at UII, although continuous efforts are still needed to deepen their internalization. This study affirms that Mohammad Hatta’s ethical independence remains relevant as a conceptual foundation for strengthening Islamic character education at the institutional level.
